WHY THIS AUTISM BLOG?

I want you to get to know my son Jack, whether you know him in real life or you want to know how one family tries to embrace autism. This autism blog is where I will record our efforts to help our Jack to “Go!”

If autism is a part of your family, I hope to help you as your child is learning to “Go!” too.

Lastly, autism is all around us—I want to raise awareness to help others to recognize it and know how to help these amazing kids and their caretakers!

Once we ‘officially’ joined the autism club, I have felt strongly that I need to spread the word to others about:

  • autism blog

    Jack at 3 1/2

    How to recognize autistic traits

  • What to expect in getting a diagnosis
  • What to do in the early diagnosis days
  • What to do with a child with autism
  • The fun stuff: including activities, strategies, products, routines
  • Our successes, our challenges, our decisions
  • My thoughts as I process my son’s life

I need you to realize that I am one person with one son with his spot on the Autism Spectrum. I am a mom: I am not in any way a scholar or professional and we’re only about 4 years into this. Since my child is 8, that’s where my experience ends for now. However– our beginning stages are pretty fresh in my mind and I want to share details on this critical time with others.

This autism blog will not go in chronological or topical order. This is mostly because I will be recalling past experiences while also going on with our current life. Some days I will need to share the day’s news and other days I will delve into the past or into research that has helped me.

It’s a new world after a diagnosis and I know how lost I felt. I want to be a resource for those who find themselves in this position. You’re welcome to join our family’s journey as our Jack grows and “Go’s!” (and back-pedals, too). I know that with every milestone things will change. On this autism blog we’ll learn, we’ll cry, we’ll vent, we’ll figure out new strategies, and most importantly, we’ll celebrate these awesome kids together!

Thank for your openness. My son is the same age, he will be 6 in July, and he got a diagnosis just last December. It’s been a hard confusing time since he is on the higher functioning end of the spectrum and sometimes his symptoms and struggles aren’t so apparent. But it sounds like our boys have quite a bit in common. Thank you for sharing. ❤?

Yes! It sounds like they have a lot in common, even down to similar birthdays (Jack turns 6 in August). Yep, it’s those little quirky things thrown in with typical behavior that made it hard to know if we should seek help. I’m so glad we found each other!
